Why teach coping skills?

In the wake of the pandemic, our youth have faced numerous challenges and losses. From losing loved ones to COVID-19 to feeling disconnected and lonely without their peers, many have struggled both academically and emotionally. As a result, it’s crucial that we equip our young people with coping skills to help them navigate post pandemic era and continued difficult times. Youth anxiety is still prevalent among students. That’s why this teacher’s lesson plan, complete with a teacher guide, is an invaluable resource for teaching our youth how to cope and take control of their own lives. With this plan, students will learn how to identify their options and find the power within themselves to respond effectively and confidently.

Objectives:

The content in this activity packet:

1) Could push away student’s typical quick reactions that previously led to increased anxiety and negative emotions.

2) May highlight to the student ways to tune in and  respond to upcoming situations instead of using the familiar quick reactions.

3) May deliver to the student personal control over life situations with increased autonomy to cope, find courage, and self-advocate.

4) Could bring the student balance and relieve lower emotions making it easier to move into higher emotions of contentment and positive expectation.
